THE DETAILS MATTER
Why Lab-Created Moissanite
Moissanite is a gemstone made from silicon carbide, and it is not diamond. Jewelry-size moissanite is lab-created. People often choose it for its bright fire, everyday durability, clearly different center-stone origin, and lower price than many diamond options.

The short answer
- Moissanite is a distinct gemstone—not mined diamond and not lab-grown diamond.
- Our listed center stones are lab-created moissanite.
- It is known for strong brilliance and colorful fire.
- A lab-created center stone avoids the need for a newly mined center stone, but that does not make the whole piece impact-free.
- We disclose stone, metal, finish, size, delivery, and return details on the relevant pages.
What is moissanite?
Moissanite is silicon carbide. Natural moissanite exists, but GIA reports that it is extremely rare and that gem-quality natural material has not been found. The moissanite used for jewelry is therefore created for gem use.
It can look diamond-like at first glance, but it has its own optical character. Moissanite often shows more colorful fire, while diamond is a different material with a different crystal structure. Calling moissanite a diamond would be inaccurate.
Why choose lab-created moissanite?
The choice is practical and personal. You may want visible sparkle without making a mined diamond the center of the purchase. You may prefer a price that leaves room for the life, trip, home, or celebration around the jewelry. Or you may simply like moissanite's brighter flashes of color.
Is moissanite sustainable or ethical?
A lab-created moissanite center stone does not require a newly mined center stone. That is a meaningful origin difference, but it is not proof that an entire ring or pair of earrings has zero environmental or social impact. Energy, metals, finishing, packaging, and shipping still matter.
We therefore avoid blanket terms such as “zero impact,” “carbon neutral,” “recycled,” or “independently certified ethical” unless we hold specific evidence for the exact claim. Our current promise is narrower: clearly name the lab-created moissanite and disclose the materials we have on record.
How does it compare with diamond?
| Question | Lab-created moissanite | Diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Silicon carbide gemstone | Carbon gemstone |
| Typical visual character | Strong brilliance with more colorful fire | Distinct diamond light performance |
| Center-stone origin in our store | Lab-created | We do not sell diamond center stones in the current collection |
| Budget | Our launch styles are priced under $60 | Varies widely by origin and specifications |
Is it right for you?
Choose moissanite if you enjoy visible fire, want a clearly named lab-created center stone, and prefer to spend less than many diamond purchases require. Choose based on what the stone is—not because someone tells you it is “basically a diamond.”
Frequently asked questions
Is moissanite a lab-grown diamond?
No. Lab-grown diamond is diamond grown by a manufacturing process. Moissanite is a different gemstone with a different chemical composition.
Is moissanite suitable for regular wear?
GIA reports a Mohs hardness of about 9.25 for synthetic moissanite. That makes the stone highly scratch resistant, but settings and finishes still need normal jewelry care.
Does lab-created mean zero impact?
No. It describes how the center stone was created. It does not prove zero impact for the metal, energy, labor, packaging, or shipping.
